Eureka Springs Visit cancel

I was planning a trip to Eureka Springs, Arkansas. We visited with our in-laws on a bus tour last year. It was such a quaint little town.

I got online and booked a little cottage that was so charming according to the website.

Yesterday I received an email from a friend that lives in the area. She told me to stay away from that place as it is very dirty and unkept. She attached a review from trip advisor showing a totally different set of photos of the real cottage. Luckily it was 22 days away from my trip and there is a 3 week cancellation window. However, the owner insists on receiving cash for your stay. If you cancel you can't get your money back, you have to take it in credit. Credit has rules about not staying on a weekend or holiday or during the month of OCtober.

Wow, and we received 4 pages of rules in the mail. If you don't check in at 3pm there is a $25 fee. If you are a smoker (Which I have never been) there is a $100 deposit. You only get that back when the housekeeper checks the cottage to be sure you didn't smoke. THen they return the $100 CASH deposit. I think we see a trend.

Here are the photos from trip advisor. Way different than the website pictures:

That last photo really did me in, the website is totally misleading. The Chamber of Commerce in that town should do something about this. I'm heartbroken. This was to be my birthday weekend get away. Now it is ruined.

OMG!!!!! I'd be mad and upset too! How can they get away with this? Be glad though that now you have another chance to make your birthday weekend FUN/ENJOYABLE instead of what it could have been like if you would have gone to this hole in the wall. EEK. The couch with the cushions on the floor (I think?) was disgusting. The whole place screams bedbugs to me!

Yes, clearly the website photos are very dated. We drove by the place when we went to Arkansas. I did get a chance to speak to the owner on the phone. She admitted that she had somebody running it for her the past 10 or more years and they weren't doing a very good job........oh, REALLY!?!?!?
