My first memory of cooking comes from our family's Arkansas days.

My mom learned to cook when she married my dad and moved to Arkansas, and the bulk of her skill was in deep frying.

The one project that our family did together was frogging. Daddy and John (my brother) would go get the frogs. They were the size of poodles.
Then my job was to whack the frogs on the back of the head to kill them. My mom then cut them up for frying. I would stand in the kitchen and watch the Crisco oil melt from a big hunk of white goo into a pan full of hot oil. We then battered up the frogs and fried them.

Tasted like chicken.

Remember those boxes of bananna breads that Mom used to order from Jewel T? My first memory is of making one of those and then putting frosting on it (which you weren't supposed to do) and then eating most of the loaf of bread. Needless to say I was very sick afterwards!

awww what an awsome rak, I have just started getting my dd (3yrs old) into "cooking" with me ---no oven of course for her.

My first memory of learning to cook would have to be when I was about 4 and mom left me and my brother in charge of the platters for christmas even, of course we were to young to touch the stove but we got to set all the goodies out and make the dips. We argued through the whole process who got to stir more turns etc etc etc. I am big time cooking/baking lover I just wish I had someone here to really appreciate it. Kids are still to young to enjoy the eating part and a single mom so sometimes cooking is ALL just about the cooking/baking and not the eating.

My first memory of cooking wasn't very good. I was young and newly married. I decided to fry chicken. Needless to say, we ended up going to my mom's house for dinner. The chicken was raw in the middle. My mom thought it was hilarious. I was upset and embarassed. My mom gave us a case of hamburger helper a few days later. To this day, I can't stand hamburger helper.

Growing up, my mom didn't want to mess with teaching me to cook. When my parents got divorced, I was thrown into the mommy roll very quickly. My first memory of cooking was in HIGH SCHOOL...gasp! LOL I opened some canned peas...drained them and put them in the pan. They burned. I opened a second can..didn't drain it this time, but went ahead and put cheese in because my brother and sis wanted cheese on their peas. LOL Third time was the charm. Who would have thought that canned peas could be so tricky? I have 2 little ones now and they help me every chance I can get. My girl is going to be able to cook!!!

Thanks for letting me share...that was a fun memory.

Thanks for the opportunity to enter your great rak. Well, I have lots of stories of when I first started to cook. I started cooking a little over 9 years ago, when I first started out with my now husband. Boy, I burned soup, made salty spaghetti, burned rice, what didn't I do. I learned now, but it was very difficult for me. I remember long hours on the phone with my mom on the other end and asking all sorts of questions. "How much water?", etc. It makes me laugh just thinking about it. My husband was very encouraging though. Thanks again for this wonderful rak. Good luck to all.

My dh woild like nothing more than for me to learn how to cook like Paula Dean. he drools at the tv when she is on and as big as her meals are he would stop eating 6 times a day. lol.
My first memory of cooking was my grandma teaching me how to scramble eggs. We made home made bisquits and even some gravy. Yummmy.
Thanks for sharing this with us. Blessings.

My first memory of cooking...I had to laugh just thinking about it. My parents left me at home alone (when I was old enough) so I was also on my own when it came to making myself something to eat after school. I would make fish sticks in a pan, just long enough for them to warm up. I ate them COLD, I never figured out how to make them without burning them but getting them to be done all the way through. I consider myself a fairly good cook today though :)

My First memory of cooking was....

Oh my me and my sister were like the bopsy twins what one didn't think of the other one did....

One day Grandma had run to the store and Mom was at work. My sister and I were hungry. So we went into the kitchen and found a cake mix and some corn.. we stirred it together. We were not allowed to use the stove so we put it on a plate in the sun waiting for it to rise...it worked for grandmas bread. Well grandma got home as we were waiting for it to raise and she sent us out side while she baked our cake...it was so good we did eat it...the best part was that the corn melt when you bake it in a cake or so we were told...LOL that was the best cake I ever helped make.

My first cooking memory is making pizzas with my grandpa when I was just 5 or 6. He would pick up pizza dough at the local market and we would get to spread it out and top it however we pleased.
I'm doing that with my own kids now.

I don't know if it is my first memory since I have always remembered helping in the kitchen.

I was excited to finally be allowed to give cracking an egg open. We were making french toast. Let me tell you I was floating on cloud 9.

The first time I tried to cook I attempted to make french toast for my little brother and the neighborhood boys. I was never really taught how to cook on the stove. I believed you cooked everything on the highest temp the whole time. Needless to say - the french toast was BLACK and no one ate it AND I ruined mom's pan - which of course didn't go over too well!! I don't think I've ever made french toast since....now that I think about it! HA!

My favorite memory is of my Dad watching us at night while my Mom worked night shift. We ate alot of hot dogs in those days. Hot dogs in a bun, hot dogs & scrambled eggs, fried hot dog sandwich, etc. But what made eating all those hot dogs worth it was our dessert, baked apples with cinnamon. The apples that are huge (in 1964), you core the apple leaving the bottom alone, add sugar and cinnamon, bake and start eating as soon as their cool enough. Yummalicious!

This is a great book! My first memory of cooking, huh? This is hard! Maybe that's why I don't cook now! LOL! I can tell you that I have always loved being in the kitchen! One of my favorite activities as a very young toddler was to crawl into the kitchen, open up the cabinets, proceed to take out EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF TUPPERWARE and crawl in! LOL! Drove my poor mother nuts! She must have reorganized her Tupperware cabinet every day for months on end! I do remember entering the fun cooking/recipe contests that we always had during Health Week at school. I would always come up with something very creative that looked like a rag doll or something fun! I even won a time or two!

My Mom always made wonderful home-cooked meals when I was little. Once, we had a big family party (outside at our pool). My cousin and I helped my Mom make the salad. My Mom sprinkled Garlic Salt on the salad greens. It tasted so good and we ate so much of it that we had to make more. We had to go in the garden and pick extra cucumbers and tomatoes because we ate too many of them.

When I was 7 I asked my mom for an Easy Bake oven. Instead of that she taught me how to use the real oven. Of course it was totally not what I wanted :) I did however learn to enjoy cooking and would occasionally subject my family to my 'experiments'. How I didn't kill them all is still a mystery.
